Mal Chase

Mal assumed this position after the untimely death of Dick Stilling who had been the Facilities Manager for many years. For a year or so prior to his death, Dick (and Michelle) had showed Mal much about the workings of the Church and Charter House, so that he was somewhat aware of the day-to-day operation of both buildings.

Prior to coming to Middlebury, Mal had been a member of the Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church and an Elder on their Property Ministry. This Ministry was heavily involved in the plant maintenance as well as use and security of the building.

His occupation centered on chemistry and physics (thermodynamics, thermophysics, spectroscopy, and equations of state), working at Ionics, Incorporated for two years, The Dow Chemical Company for 18 years, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for 13 years.

Mal is currently on contract to NIST as co-editor of the Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data, a NIST journal (specializing in the critical evaluation of numeric data), published in cooperation with the American Institute of Physics. He is also a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, ASTM Committee E27, the ASME Standards Technology, LLC (Air Properties Committee), and the Board of Directors of the Institute for Clinical Sciences, Incorporated. In addition, Mal works part-time as a driver for Elderly Services, Inc.

Mal is married to Pat Chase (for 43 years); they have lived in Tallahassee, Florida, Midland, Michigan, Gaithersburg, Maryland, and now Middlebury, Vermont. They have three children: Matthew, Cathy, and Tim.
